Shopping at Metrotown is not the only form of recreation in Burnaby.  In fact, if you’re not a shopaholic, then there are plenty of alternatives to consider.  Adjacent to the shopping at Metrotown is the spectacular urban park of Central Park. Central Park on it’s own will keep you busy for a lifetime.  Walking trails cut left and right and east and west and north and south throughout the park where you can gaze skyward towards the beautiful old growth trees in the heart of the city.  Golf anyone? It’s not a full course but the pitch and putt at Central Park makes it fun for kids and adults of all levels of golf. The spectacular scenery around the course can distract nicely from a terrible golf game…speaking for myself!  If golf isn’t your thing then head over to the superb tennis courts that will please any player. If it’s a nice day then the courts will be busy, so read the rules and you’ll see understand how you should get yourself a court. After tennis you should consider a dip in the outdoor pool at Central Park if it’s summertime.  For indoor swimming and fun then check out the many community centres throughout the city of Burnaby. If you’re looking for more rugged scenery then head across town to Burnaby Mountain at the base of Simon Fraser University. If you want to hike or run, then endless trails await you. There are also many options for mountain biking.  These ideas just scratch the surface for fun things to do in Burnaby.

Finding a great place to eat in Kitsilano is so very very simple.  Go outside, turn right and then go into the first place you see. There are so many great places that you’ll find on your own.  So let’s just consider this a starting place to find a few that we like. If you’re looking for healthy choices then we’d suggest a stop in at Tractor on 4th Avenue.  Salads with things in them that you’d never throwing in together, that end up tasting incredible. Consider a salad/sandwich combo, you won’t be disappointed. If you’re looking for more spicy, then walk across the street and go to Maenam and enjoy some fabulous Thai food.  It’s contemporary thai with a twist. There are some surprising but incredible dishes. Do you want to make sure that your food is sustainable and farm to table? Then head a few blocks away to the Farmer’s Apprentice. Fresh as fresh can be. The flavours come from the freshness.  You know when you bite into a proper tomato or red strawberry…well that’s what you’ll get at the Farmer’s Apprentice. If you’re looking for something more sweet, then head around the corner from there to Fir Street where you’ll find an authentic french bakery in Beaucoup. A real cup of coffee and a buttery croissant.  Stop reading…get out there and get your fix of any of the above or find your own new great spot in Kits.

Historical New West Revitalized

New Westminster was the capital of the Colony of British Columbia from 1858-1866.  It was the epicentre of the Colony and then for a long time the hub of the Province.  All trade went through New West. The Fraser River accommodated many log booms floating into and out of the city.  The railway brought industry and commerce to the area until the Canadian Pacific Railway extended their tracks to the new city of Vancouver.  Columbia Street in the 1960’s boasted Eaton’s, Kresge’s and Woolworths. People from all around the Lower Mainland would go to New West as a destination.  The Columbia Theatre and the Paramount Theatre also were a huge draw. But as the 70’s and 80’s came around New West was in a decline where it wasn’t able to compete with Vancouver as a destination.  Over the past decade New West has been revitalizing Columbia St and the waterfront area that is adjacent to the Skytrain Station. It’s quickly becoming a place that is embracing it’s past and incorporating it’s past into it’s future.

White Rock

White Rock borders the USA to the south and is a short drive to Vancouver and surrounding municipalities throughout the Lower Mainland. Legend has it that the big white rock on the beach was thrown by a young chief across the Salish Sea (Strait of Georgia) and wherever it landed is where he’d move his family and this is where the Semiahmoo Nation began.

The beach is a major draw to the area and is a place where you’ll spend lots of time should you move here. However White Rock has many other places to explore and reasons to call it home. Quick access to the USA allows you to head south for an easy day trip or beyond. Crescent Beach is an alternate beach that boasts a quaint feel, a few great restaurants and a relaxing vibe. All amenities that you could dream up are readily available in White Rock like fantastic restaurants, great shopping, community centres and amazing golf courses.
